"Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman is not at home, he is gone on a long journey." [Proverbs 7:18-19]

I’m kind of really proud that this is my intro paragraph to my paper. This is the first time I post my writing publicly so….be nice.
It was some time ago that two people lived together in a small room, sharing everything that could possibly be divided into two equal parts. Each had their own side of the room, their own closet, desk and preferred side of the sink. They shared their highs and lows with each other, showing support for each other when one of them was down and celebrating with each other in times of great joy. So when one of them took in a tormented and homeless goldfish, they shared the goldfish as well. They loved the goldfish like a child, constantly keeping its bowl clean and feeding it regularly. It wasn’t until the goldfish started to look a little bloated that they noticed something was wrong. Worried, they looked up what could be wrong only to come to a dead end. A few days later the goldfish died; bewildered the two tried to figure out what possibly could have gone wrong. They both made sure the bowl was clean, and that the bowl was at a safe distance from the window, and that the goldfish was happy by feeding it every day in the morning and mid-day. The thing was that each person woke up at different time in the morning and would come in at a different time in the afternoon; which meant that they had fed the goldfish twice as much than they intended, meaning they fed their goldfish to death.
Where has this been all my life!?
okay so
“said” is an invisible word. people don’t notice it. they notice quotes and the nouns that address who is saying it.
my personal rule is to use a word other than “said” if you otherwise can’t tell the emotion that is being portrayed in speech. overuse of alternatives just makes you look like you’re trying too hard.
writing is about style but, like art, you have to know some basics before delving into your novel.

“The whole scene was eerie, surreal quality, like when you’er on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.”

John Green is one of my favorite authors, his words are insightful and revealing. The thing I most wanted to talk about was the point he made about the character in novels. When people pick up a book they instantly want to relate to someone in the story, to feel like they can connect with the words that the author writes. While connections like that are what make some literature wonderful it does not mean that all books have to be like this in order to make them great. The author’s job is to tell a story from a point of view that is not your own and to paint an almost seamless frame by frame movie in your head. If they succeed at doing both of those things then you have a great novel. Characters and story lines are not always perfect and happy because if they were then books would become boring. In retrospect I guess this is why I’ve always been a fan of Dystopian literature like Brave New World or 1984—because the characters aren’t perfect and likable, and the story line isn’t always happy. People can complain about characters not being likable, but that should not count as a reason why the book is not a good novel.
I tend to write the wittiest little anecdotes in my private journal.
And I feel that if I ever attempt to share them out of context then the joke will be lost or that I’m just witty in my own head and no one else really cares or finds it funny.
